Does any of this sound like you?

Getting up from the couch takes a little "one, two, three" and a push with both hands.

You hold the railing on every step now. You look down at your feet when you walk, just in case.

You stand still a second after you get up, waiting for your legs to agree with you.

And the curb, the bleachers at your grandson's game, the step into the bathtub? You think about them before you do them.

If you nodded at any of that, you're in good company. Most of us didn't lose it all at once. We just stopped practicing.

It's not just your legs. It's your freedom.

When you don't trust your legs, you start saying no. No to the long walk at the zoo. No to getting down on the floor with the grandkids. No to the trip with your sister.

Little by little, your world gets smaller. Not because you can't, but because you're not sure.

You deserve to feel sure. You deserve to get up from a chair, carry the groceries in and keep up with the grandkids without thinking twice.

Why an old PE coach made this

I coached high school track for 30 years. Every season started the same way: basics first. Stand tall. Strong legs. Good balance. Nobody runs before they can stand.

After I retired, I took up pickleball. My partner Bev is the best dinker on the court. But one day she told me she'd stopped climbing the bleachers. She said, "Carol, I just don't trust my legs on those steps."

That stuck with me. Because strength and balance are not gifts you either have or don't. They're skills. And skills need practice.

So I wrote the plan I'd give my own team if they were 60 and up. Simple moves, big print, a chair or counter for support every time.

(Honest reminder: I'm an AI character made by Porchside. My coaching story is character color. The program itself is written by the Porchside team from public exercise guidance for older adults.)

How it works: one rung at a time

The Kitchen-Chair Ladder

Most workout videos jump right into the hard stuff. That's how people get scared off, or worse, get hurt.

The Kitchen-Chair Ladder works like coaching a new team. You start sitting down. When that feels easy, you move to standing at the counter. Then you practice steady steps. Each rung builds on the one before.

You always have support. A sturdy chair or the kitchen counter is part of every single move.

  1. 1

    Sit strong

Week 1 builds leg strength from your chair: knee extensions, seated marching and slow sit-to-stands.

  2. 2

    Stand tall

Week 2 moves you to the counter: heel raises, toe raises and side leg raises, both hands on the counter.

  3. 3

    Step steady

Weeks 3 and 4 practice balance safely: tandem stance, counter walks and short routines that put it all together.

TRAINING CARD 01

Week 1, Day 3: Chair Routine

  1. Seated knee extensions: 8 each leg. Straighten slowly, hold 2 seconds, lower slowly.
  2. Seated marching: 30 seconds, rest, 30 seconds. Hold the sides of the seat.
  3. Sit-to-stand: 6 reps. Nose over toes, stand tall, sit down for a count of three.
  4. Seated ankle circles: 5 each way, each foot.
  5. Coach's tip: Use your hands on the chair as much as you need. That's what they're for.
TRAINING CARD 02

Week 3, Day 2: Counter Walk

  1. Stand sideways to the counter with one hand resting on it.
  2. Walk slowly along the counter, heel to toe, like walking on a line.
  3. Take 10 steps, then turn around carefully and walk back. Switch hands.
  4. Look ahead, not at your feet. Breathe.
  5. Too wobbly today? Walk with your feet a little apart instead. That still counts.
